A Directory of Services for older People has recently been launched in Galway City. The Directory is the result of reseach undertaken by Galway Healthy Cities project. The research asked older people for their views on the extened to which Galway is an 'age-friendly' city. As a result, a number of agencies and groups (including the Croí na Gaillimhe Resource Centre) worked together to complile a comprehensive directory of the community, voluntary organisations, HSE and other public services available in Galway city and also, details of national organistions.

Positive Ageing Week 2010

Positive Ageing Week 2010 takes place from Friday 24th September until Saturday 2nd October and over 800 events will be held nationwide to celebrate. Positive Ageing Week is now in its eight year and the aim of the programme is to focus on the positive aspects of ageing. It is easy to place an emphasis on the negative side, but with Positive Ageing Week, we celebrate the achievements of older people, and the contribution made by older people to their communities, along with celebrating the support services provided to older people in our community.

Positive Ageing Week is run by Age Action Ireland and local groups and is sponsored by ESB Customer Supply. It forms part of Age Action’s celebration of the UN ‘International Day of Older Persons’ (1st October). Events and activities are organised by active retirement groups, local voluntary groups, nursing homes, libraries, commercial organisations and individual older people themselves.

Galway is one of the 15 ‘Positive Ageing Towns’ in Ireland for 2010 and is joined as a Positive Ageing Week host town by Arklow, Athy, Ballymun, Boyle, Cashel, Drogheda, Dublin, Dundalk, Dungarvan, Midleton, Sligo, Trim, Tullamore and Waterford.

As part of the Positive Ageing Week celebrations in Galway, the Croí na Gaillimhe Resource Centre will be hosting a number of events.

Monday 27th September from 2pm – 3.30pm
On Monday 27th September, members of the Garda Síochana will give a chat on ‘Safety and Security’ advice for older people and afterwards a group relaxation class will take place with Emer Maher.
