Day trip to Connemara

The members of our Men's Group & Social Club have returned from a superb day-trip across the rugged landscape of Connemara. They took a comfortable bus and have visited many sites along the way. The weather was great, the food delicious and the laughter constant - or so we heard.

Do you know a man that's free on Thursday afternoon? If so, do tell him about our men's group - the group meets every Thursday from 3PM to 5PM. All men are welcome!

Creative Writing Group

Creative Writing Group

Every Friday morning from 10.30-12.30am, Croi na Gaillimhe comes alive
with the thoughts and views from a creative writing group.

Consisting of 7-10 people, their ages, are wide-ranging.
Led by a very learned facilitator, John McGinnty, the group share their observations
on life, personally or not, as it scurries around them.
It’s where we have a great laugh on funny things people do or say and frank discussions on things that matter, socially and historical facts.
Each member feels protected from the outside world, safe in a cocoon for two hours.       Though daunting to read ones material at first it soon becomes a second nature to share.
After all, there is a book, waiting to be written, in all of us.
New members always welcome.

Drumming with the Young Hearts

YOUNG HEARTS - Intergenerational Project Tuesdays 10.30am -1.00pm

Eamon has facilitated drumming sessions with the inter-generational group over the last three years. His workshops focus on respect, trust and participation, in a fun atmosphere. He taught the group some simple drumming rhythms and then combined them to make music. The energy from the group was amazing. Some of the adults had drummed with Eamon in previous years and were delighted at how different each session has been. The TYs enjoyed themselves so much that they are keen to get Eamon to come to the school and work with them there.

Positive ageing week

Positive Ageing Week 1-11 October celebrates the positive aspects of ageing and honours the contributions older people make to their communities. Many events are held throughout the country from coffee mornings to Golf tournaments.
We in Croi na Gaillimhe celebrated the start of positive ageing week in fine style with complimentary soothing hand massages from Alexander Technique Practitioner Michele Horgan.
Michele gave a short talk and demonstration on the Alexander method and its benefits in releasing tension, de-stressing   and energising your life.  The photographs show Michele and members of our social club enjoying the benefits of therapeutic hand massage, and learning about balanced efficient and supportive postural habits through the Alexander technique.

Galway-Mayo Asylum Seeker Project Invited to Present Submission to the Department of Justice

Galway-Mayo Asylum Seeker Project Invited to Present Submission to the Department of Justice

Galway-Mayo project SOLAS (Support, Orientation and Learning for Asylum Seekers) was selected to present it's  policy submission to the Cross Departmental Group on Integration at the Department of Justice.

The SOLAS project was developed under a tri-partite partnership of Mayo Intercultural Action, Croí na Gaillimhe/SVP, and the Health Services Executive West.  As a result of this partnership a regional support structure has been established across Mayo and Galway to address the many varied needs of persons in the asylum process. The SOLAS project received 12 month funding under the European Refugee Fund to carry out its work plan.

The SOLAS project's policy submission highlights the detrimental impact that long stays in Direct Provision have on Asylum Seekers ability to integrate. The issues for Asylum Seekers in terms of integration are multi-fold. Firstly while in the asylum process Asylum Seekers are physically segregated from the majority community in Direct Provision Centres, in some cases for up to a decade. During their time in the asylum process they  are unable to engage in employment which is the cornerstone of integration. Furthermore Asylum Seekers and  their children are further excluded from community integration by a process of financial exclusion.  Asylum seekers receive an  allowance of €19.10 per adult and €9.60 per child.  Children in the Asylum process including those born in Ireland are precluded from receiving Child Benefit due to their parents status as Asylum Seekers. Representatives from the Asylum community, both past and present highlighted these issues on behalf of the SOLAS project at the Cross Departmental group's meeting in Hanover Street, Dublin on the 08th September 2014.

If you require further information on the SOLAS project's integration submission or information on the work of the SOLAS project, you can contact Suzanne McKane (SOLAS Galway Project Worker) by email at or by telephone at 091- 895203/086-4053602 or Patricia Luby (SOLAS project Co-Ordinator) by email at  by telephone on 094 9044511/086-0406134
